Overview of Our Services

Successful students report feeling competent and confident in their skills. Our tutors are committed to helping their students experience success. This is accomplished by developing a caring relationship as well as a thorough understanding of their learning profiles. All of our tutors specialize in working with students who have learning challenges, and have found that working one-on-one is the best way to address each student’s unique needs.  Creating a safe environment where an individual becomes proficient and independent is our goal.

Reading and Language Arts

Certified reading specialists, English teachers, and special educators work individually with students having difficulty developing word recognition, reading comprehension, and written expression skills. Using materials appropriate to students’ current levels of functioning our tutors employ a variety of techniques so students enjoy becoming accomplished, fluent readers and writers. Our tutors are trained in evidence-based programs such as the Wilson Language Program, Fundations, Rave-O, and Read Naturally.

Foundations of Mathematics

Teachers certified in elementary education, special education, and/or math offer individual instruction to elementary and middle school students who are struggling  with math computation and problem-solving skills. Instructors are sensitive to the developmental needs of children and have devised strategies to appeal to the characteristics of each learner.

Executive Function Coaching

EF Coaching is an individualized skill-based program for adolescents, teens, and adults who lack abilities in working memory, response inhibition, time management, planning/prioritizing, emotional control, metacognition, sustained attention, organization, goal-directed persistence, task initiation, and flexibility.  Once areas of weakness have been identified, goals are developed and strategies are introduced. As sessions progress, strategies are revised and modified to fit each student’s unique needs or preferences, which makes EF Coaching a collaborative process. Clients will experience success and consistency in applying their skills, making for greater independence and responsibility in the future.

Study and Organizational Skills

Certified educators teach students who already have developed basic academic skills to apply their abilities to the organization of time, materials, and assignments. They also help individuals determine study strategies that are most appropriate to their learning styles. We base our instruction on the materials assigned to students in their school programs, so tutoring time is used productively. These materials are supplemented by information and techniques with which instructors have had success during their years of experience.

Writing Support & Composition of College Essays

College essays are more important than ever before as many colleges and universities waive SAT/ACT requirements. Instruction will focus on teaching students how to write essays that emphasize individual strengths, experiences and interests. Emphasis will focus on brainstorming ideas before writing and editing to strengthen message and content.  Completed essays should reflect individualized goals and reveal what makes “you” unique from other applicants.

SAT/ACT Prep

Reading specialists and English, math, and/or special education teachers work with high-school students to determine their most effective learning modalities. Based on pre-tests and examination of performance on previous standardized tests, tutors develop an individualized course of study for each of their students. Results of pre-tests and student interviews identify skills requiring reinforcement; novel strategies are introduced to expand students’ repertoire of test-taking skills. Progress is monitored by the administration of sample exams, the results of which form the basis for ensuing sessions.
