Need help preparing for the SATs or ACTs?
SAT/ACT Prep
Reading specialists and teachers of English, math, and/or special education work with high-school students to determine their most effective learning modalities. Based on pre-tests and examination of performance on previous standardized tests, tutors develop an individualized course of study for each of their students. Results of pre-tests and student interviews identify skills requiring reinforcement; novel strategies are introduced to expand students’ repertoire of test-taking skills. Progress is monitored by the administration of sample exams, the results of which form the basis for ensuing sessions.
Although “crash” courses are the norm for SAT- and ACT-bound students, we have found that a more nurturing, steady approach to this type of important examination allows individuals to reinforce and practice skills over a longer period of time. It also helps reduce the anxiety examinees feel as a consequence of the exam and that pressured, rushed preparation may promote.
Our Program Includes:
- Reading specialists and teachers of English, math, and/or special education work with high-school students to determine their most effective learning modalities.
- Item analysis of PSAT, SAT, and/or ACT exams taken previously are consulted or tutors administer sample tests.
- Skills requiring reinforcement are identified and novel strategies are introduced to expand students’ repertoire of test-taking skills.
- Tutors develop individualized courses of study for each of their students based on this information and student interviews.
- Progress is monitored by the administration of sample exams, the results of which form the basis for ensuing sessions.
Quick SAT Tip
Use “Official” Practice Tests! Many SAT practice tests are not authentic, meaning that they are imitation tests created by companies outside of the SAT. While these tests might be pretty good, they do not compare to using authentic retired SAT tests. Using an official practice test will give you a more accurate prediction on how you will do on test day.
Quick ACT Tip
Make a game plan for managing time!
For better or worse the ACT is a timed test and it will not wait for you to finish a few more questions. In order to beat the test, you need to develop a plan for managing time. This may require wearing a digital watch so you can track your progress. Here is one time plan you might try want to try:
- English: 9 minutes a passage
- Math: 60 minutes = 60 problems – need to move faster in the beginning as problems at the end tend to be harder
- Reading: 8 minutes and 45 seconds a passage
- Science: about 5 minutes a passage
